Public Housing Residents Receive Support During the Federal Shutdown

Earlier this month, Hart Food Products and the Eastmont Community Center partnered with the LACDA to provide food assistance to public housing site residents during the longest Federal shutdown in history. During the shutdown, agencies and programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were impacted, leaving severely delayed food assistance to individuals.

The Hart Food Products connection was made possible through a West County public housing resident who alerted staff about the availability of a large size donation. In less than 24 hours from contacting Hart Food Products, the LACDA Housing Management Division (HMD) staff coordinated the pickup of 2,400 pounds of frozen chicken and numerous non-perishable items. Upon receiving the items, the LACDA staff took swift action to repackage perishable chicken into gallon size bags and had everything ready for distribution to all the LACDA’s public housing sites.

The Eastmont Community Center has also stepped in to provide nearly 300 pounds of food donations to Nueva Maravilla public housing families. Donations include rice, lentils, baby formula, fresh produce, chicken, eggs, ready-made meals, and canned goods. Aside from food items, Eastmont Community Center also provided diapers, and feminine hygiene products.

Thank you to our generous partners for combatting food insecurity in our local communities. The donations, combined with the quick action and teamwork from the LACDA HMD staff, have immediately placed food into the homes of over 200 residents across the County's public housing sites.
